The Call of the Buck
There is something magical about being alone in the woods during the crisp days of autumn. The leaves begin to change, the air becomes cooler, and the forest seems to take on a life of its own.
That feeling was the inspiration behind my latest oil painting-a large buck standing among the trees, lifting his head and calling for his mate.
I wanted to capture more than just the appearance of the deer. I wanted to capture a moment.
The buck's head is raised as his call echoes through the woods. You can almost imagine the sound traveling between the trees, searching for a response. His breath hangs in the cool autumn air, adding another layer of atmosphere to the scene and helping tell the story of the season.
As I worked on the painting, I became especially interested in the way light could draw your eye toward the buck. The surrounding forest is darker and quieter, allowing the deer to emerge from the shadows as the focal point. Loose brushwork helps keep the trees and forest floor feeling natural and untamed, while the details of the buck become more important as you move closer to him.
For me, paintings like this aren't simply about painting wildlife. They're about trying to capture the feeling of being there.
I want you to be able to look at the painting and imagine standing quietly in those woods-hearing the distant call of the buck, feeling the cool autumn air, and waiting to see if something answers from somewhere deeper in the forest.
Nature gives us these incredible moments, but they don't last very long.
As an artist, I enjoy trying to preserve one of them on canvas.
